Rockingham Regional Ambulance, Inc. & St. Joseph Hospital Donate Automated External Defibrillator to Nashua High School North

May 22, 2003 - Nashua, NH – – Rockingham Regional Ambulance, Inc. & St. Joseph Hospital recently donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to Nashua High School North. AEDs are used to treat a person who has suffered a cardiac arrest, and are designed so persons who are not medically trained can safely use them on a victim. The equipment analyzes a victim’s heart rhythm and then tells the user whether or not to deliver an electrical shock to the victim.

Nashua High School North nurses Mary Rhodes, RN, and Jenn Fitzgerald, RN, approached Chris Stawasz, Executive Director of Rockingham Regional Ambulance about donating the lifesaving equipment to the new high school. "The Nashua High School North is a state-of-the-art facility that is used in many capacities by the community," said R. Patrick Corbin, Principal of Nashua High School North. "We want our school to be Heart Safe for everyone who uses our campus."

"This donation is a perfect fit for Rockingham Regional Ambulance," said Mr. Stawasz. "Our goal is to save lives in medical emergencies. Studies have shown that if the AED shock is given within three minutes of collapsing, a victim’s survival rate can increase to 74 percent as opposed to 5 percent without an AED."

"St. Joseph Healthcare is pleased to be part of this effort," added Peter B. Davis, President and CEO of St. Joseph Hospital. "The AED’s sophisticated capabilities empower anyone to try and save a victim who has suffered sudden cardiac arrest."
