Rockingham Ambulance Responds to Hurricane Rita

December 19, 2005 - Rockingham Ambulance medics Gail O’Halloran and Wes Bartlett recently completed a 28 day mission to Southern Texas at the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after Hurricane Rita devastated the area. The 2,500+ mile one way trip took nearly 3 days to complete. FEMA and the American Ambulance Association (AAA) coordinated one of the largest EMS mobilization responses in US history.

Working in coordination with nearly 400 other ambulances from across the country, the Rockingham ALS crew operated from the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas. During their 28-day mission the crew experienced first hand the devastation and challenges that a major hurricane brings.

Rockingham’s crew worked with the US Coast Guard supporting off shore oil platform personnel’s medical needs, provided 9-1-1 services for several communities whose normal volunteers were displaced and worked with local officials moving non-ambulatory patients to and from areas of need.

Treating and transporting several dozen patients during their stay in Texas, Gail & Wes are truly a credit to the EMS profession. They volunteered for the mission, leaving their families and personal commitments without hesitation, with virtually no time to prepare. Gail and Wes were chosen from nearly 2 dozen Rockingham employees who volunteered to deploy, because of their vast experience in EMS. While in Texas, they, along with hundreds of other EMS providers, endured extreme conditions with little food, water or other basic services.

They returned to New Hampshire tired and ready for some R&R but satisfied knowing that they had helped many people in need.
